Adults with ADHD: Nourish to Flourish by Using VIA Character Strengths

ADHD Education

Research shows that less than 20% of people are flourishing. We are not functioning at our highest psychological or social level. As a human race, we are not living optimally. We are not aware of what makes up the core essence of our authentic selves. Without a foundational understanding of what makes you tick, you will not realize your full potential.

Adults with ADHD are usually not aware of what motivates them because they are challenged with their ability to self-regulate their focus during the course of the day. They don't pause and pay attention to what they are paying attention to in any given moment. This diminishes their ability to become self-aware of what successfully works and could move them forward in important areas of their lives.

Put simply, they are blind to their own strengths. They don't stay tuned long enough to recognize their daily successes, which can manifest in positive emotions, and will strengthen their ability to register these important experiences.

The registration of these positive memories is important in creating a motivational frame of reference, which can give them the confidence to take action in new arenas which are similar, but unknown. These special moments can become a resource of authentic inspiration. When accessed, they can motivate individuals to pursue important goals related to their core essence and unique way of being.

Adults with ADHD need to be vigilant about consciously focusing on the language of their signature character strengths, but also the symbols, music, pictures, stories, and anything that instantaneously links their focus and energy with these strengths. Identifying and integrating these important cues will remind them to utilize their character strengths when they are needed to activate their brains.

Character strengths nourish us all with constructive emotions. They provide us with successful reminders of what's best in us, so that we can flourish by engaging our natural capacities to pursue meaningful personal and professional goals.
