Mentor Coaches and Mentor Coaching Information
Mentor Coaching Recommended
While you may feel that you’re a natural coach with great listening and empathy, please realize that coaching is a profession with a specific skill set based on core competencies. Most professions encourage or require some form of internship or mentoring for new trainees, and with that concept in mind, ADDCA strongly encourages each trainee to work with a mentor coach to assist in your professional development as a coach.
It’s extremely useful to experience coaching yourself to help you appreciate the value of coaching. Great coaches have their own coaches.
A mentor coach can:
- Support your personal growth and development.
- Help develop your coaching skills and prepare for certification
- Encourage getting your coaching business started and growing
We are happy to refer you to mentor coaches, or you can look for a certified coach at ICF who mentors. To apply for ICF certification, you’ll need letters from two ICF-certified coaches who have heard you coach. You must have received at least 10 hours of mentor coaching to apply for certification.
You might want to think about the following questions when considering a mentor coach:
- What would I like to accomplish with a mentor coach?
- When would be the best time for me to work with a mentor coach?
- What am I looking for in a mentor coach?
- What do I expect from a mentor coach?
- What things about me would it be helpful for a mentor coach to know?
It is wise to interview a mentor coach just as you would a regular coach to find the right match for you.
